HERAT, Afghanistan, May 14 (Xinhua) — A traditional wrestling competition was held in Afghanistan’s northwestern province of Herat, attracting hundreds of spectators. The hunky wrestlers, standing barefoot in the dusk, grabbed hold of each other in a brief struggle and tackled their opponents to the ground.
No sport is older or more widely distributed than wrestling, which is often in highly local styles that have persisted to the present day. Wrestling is popular across Afghanistan and is traditionally practiced by Afghans.
