The quake also was felt in the nearby provinces of Farah and Badghis, according to local media reports.
Janan Saiq, the spokesperson of the Ministry of Disaster Management, told TOLOnews that over 2,400 people have lost their lives and over 2,000 others have been injured in the earthquake in Herat.
According to Saiq, most of the victims of the earthquake were in 13 villages of the Zinda Jan district of Herat. He said that 1,320 houses were destroyed.
Earlier, the ministry’s spokesman said that around 9,240 people were injured but later on he told TOLOnews that the tally was a mistake.
“According to basic figures, due to this earthquake, unfortunately in 13 villages named Naib Rafi, Karnil Wardaki, Panjab, Sarboland, Kashtak, Kajkal, Sia
Aab, Aghzlak, Botan, Gharmoshak, Nawabad, Chashma-e-Ghori and Naik, many people lost their lives,” he said.
He said that the earthquake inflicted casualties on the livestock but due to ongoing challenges, there are no exact figures.
“We were in the area to rescue the martyrs. The livestock were also lost in the earthquake. But Taliban (personnel) have yet to be provided as the teams are busy with rescuing operations,” he said.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), six earthquakes occurred in western Afghanistan, the largest one was at a magnitude of 6.3.
Based on the information from (USGS), the latest earthquake with a magnitude of 5.9 occurred at a depth of 7.7 km in the Zinda Jan district of Herat.
The quake also was felt in the nearby provinces of Farah and Badghis, according to local media reports.
The Ministry of Defense also announced that it had sent a medical team to Herat to help treat the injured people.
